Aspect Ratios

I felt I needed some reassurance as to what the difference is between some of the popular aspect ratios.

4:3
This has been used for many generations, even being used for 35mm films in the silent era. This format is normally only used now to view older generation films.

16:9
This is most commonly used now and is a widescreen HDTV format used for DVDs. There are many ways to convert 4:3 footage to fill a 16:9 screen. This includes stretching, zooming in or using the pillar/letter box effect.
